2017

2017 was the second year after the reboot, and the committee expanded with the addition of Sumant Bhat.  The conference moved from Berkeley, CA across the Bay to San Francisco.

Speakers were Fatima Asghar, poet, performer, educator and writer; Eugenie Chan, award-winning playwright; E.J. Koh poet. Sponsors were, again: Black Pine Circle School, Blink Consulting, Fleissig Design, Georgetown Day School, Marin Country Day School, San Francisco University High School, and StrateGenius. Lick-Wilmerding joined as a sponsor as well as the hosting school.

This is the first year the conference was able to offer financial aid to attendees!

After this conference, committee members decided that the conference would be held twice in the same metropolitan area in order to give local committee members two years of experience. To this day, many local committee members are teachers who gain valuable administrative and leadership experience by organizing the AsEA conference.

Using the same wedding template pack Leslie found the previous year year, the flyer to the right was the result.

2017 Conference Information

Welcome to the seventh Asian Educators Alliance National Conference! Last year, we were excited to revive the AsEA Conference and hope to bring the renewed sense of purpose and energy to this year’s version. The AsEA Conference focuses on creating a space for API (Asian/Pacific Islander) educators from across the country to both celebrate our place in the educational sphere and also address the structural, cultural, and institutional challenges that we encounter in our schools and communities. This year, we are offering an even wider range of speakers, panels, workshops, and breakout sessions, all from the core theme of “Uniting Our Voices for Action.” For us, this is a logical extension of last year’s theme, “From Self to Solidarity.” Our goal for the 2017 conference is to build on that solidarity to take action as a more united front in order to better support both our student and educator communities. Further, we want to empower both our individual and collective voices and reflect on ways to subsequently catalyze meaningful change in ourselves, our communities, and beyond.
